Council Committee on Sustainability and Circular Economy3:20 speaking time

Follow-up on her Congo motion

The committee discussed how the executive had dealt with her motion 422 on Amsterdam’s responsibility in the energy transition without harming human rights in the Global South. Carla explained why cobalt and coltan from eastern Congo, with its armed conflict, child labour and environmental destruction, matter to Amsterdam: they are in batteries, phones and medical equipment. Alderman Pels said it is important that attention keeps being drawn to Congo. Some of her questions were referred to Alderman Van Buren; Carla took them to his committee (in Dutch).

After a new error in the AFIS payment system, in which amounts were paid twice, Carla said: mistakes are human, but this one was avoidable. On the civil servants’ work stoppage of 1 September she asked why civil servants should remain neutral, when we now reject such behaviour from the Second World War (in Dutch).

Hidden poverty

On the study of hidden poverty, Carla pointed to the working poor and entrepreneurs who do not know about available schemes. She asked whether people in that situation, or those who support them, can help think about how to reach them, and how much contact there is with entrepreneurs’ groups organised around ethnicity: one message in such a group reaches hundreds of people. She also asked whether the database from the COVID period is still used to approach entrepreneurs, and how children can help their parents. The alderman said the database has been used and that communication is targeted in the Masterplan areas (in Dutch).
