No Amsterdam energy transition at the expense of eastern Congo
The city will investigate whether its procurement contributes to mining in conflict zones, and share that knowledge in international networks.
✓ Adopted
Why this motion
The energy transition increases demand for minerals such as cobalt and coltan. These often come from conflict areas such as eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where mining regularly leads to serious human rights violations and major environmental damage.
Carla argues that Amsterdam has a moral responsibility to contribute to fair and sustainable sourcing, and can use networks such as Eurocities and C40 to exert influence.
What the council asks
The city council asks the mayor and aldermen to:
- 1Investigate which municipal purchases may involve mining from conflict areas, and how procurement can be adjusted so the city does not contribute to (the escalation of) conflict.
- 2Actively share the findings in (inter)national networks.
